Eugenol is a colorless or yellow oleaginous liquid with a strong, aromatic clove-like odor and a pungent taste. In zinc oxide and eugenol pastes it has good biological compatibility, which can influence the repair of both the pulp organ and surgical wounds. Slightly soluble in water and completely soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform, fixed oils and glacial acetic acid.

Eugenol is used in the composition of various dental products, such as in eugenolic zinc oxide pastes, with the formation of endodontic cements and in temporary restorative cements, with the function of analgesic and antiseptic.
